Ayn Rand was a Russian-born American author whose works and
writings elaborated upon an original philosophy reflected in her literary
manifestations. With The Fountainhead
and Atlas Shrugged as her two most
recognizable works, Ayn Rand had left behind a legacy represented in her philosophy
known as Objectivism. Within the core of her literature, Rand stressed the
importance of man’s inner sense of ego and selfishness as his primary means for
his overall worth and value. Throughout her subsequent writings, Ayn Rand
advocated the principals of rational egoism, and came to identify with a free-market
ideology for the economy in virtual opposition to any derivation of
collectivism including socialism and communism. Her legacy has created a large platform
of respect as a highly popular as well as controversial author. Her writings
and works were confined and centralized within a non-profit organization known
as the Ayn Rand Institute (ARI) founded by Canadian-American philosopher
Leonard Peikoff, the legal heir to her estate.
